Montgomery, Jones to compete in Mexico
RALEIGH (North Carolina), June 8: Tim Montgomery, who has appeared this week at an arbitration hearing on doping charges that could result in a lifetime ban, and partner Marion Jones will run at a meeting in Monterrey, Mexico on Saturday. “They will both run a 100 (metres),” their manager Charles Wells said on Tuesday.
Wells said the races would be “their last before the US championships (which start on June 23)”.
The US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has charged world 100 metres record holder Montgomery with serious doping violations in connection with the BALCO scandal.
A hearing on his case is now taking place in San Francisco by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and could last for most of the week.
Montgomery was observed entering the site of the hearing for a second consecutive day on Tuesday.
USADA is seeking a lifetime ban for Montgomery, who has never failed a doping test and on Saturday again denied that he had used performance-enhancing drugs.
He is eligible to compete until CAS announces its decision.
The CAS decision is not likely to come before late July, secretary general Matthieu Reeb said.
BALCO founder Victor Conte refused to testify at the CAS hearing on Monday, his lawyer said.
Jones and Montgomery have run poorly recently.
Montgomery finished seventh at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon on Saturday. He said later that his mind had been on the CAS hearing.
Jones withdrew from the Prefontaine Classic after two slow performances in Europe.
Although the triple Olympic champion from Sydney 2000 has never failed a doping test, she has also been under scrutiny by USADA in connection with the BALCO scandal.—Reuters
