Demand for probe into shoddy canal work

By Our Correspondent

LARKANA, June 8: District Nazim Khursheed Ahmed Junejo, has expressed dissatisfaction over the quality of construction work of the retaining walls of the Rice Canal and its revamping, and has demanded a probe by provincial irrigation authorities into the matter.

Sources in the district government told this correspondent here on Wednesday that the district nazim, in a letter sent to the provincial irrigation secretary, pointed out the incongruities in the work.

Referring to his visit to the site on May 31, he claimed that the contractor, in connivance with the executing agency, had used inferior material; moreover, the workmanship was not up to the mark. The unsatisfactory work, made possible due to the ineffective supervision of irrigation officials, could cause huge financial and physical losses, he added.

Funds for the revamping work were released in December 2004; however, it was started in April this year, merely a month before the opening of the canal, and was left incomplete, he said.

He called for initiating an investigation into the matter to ascertain the causes and the extent of the losses, and to fix responsibility.

It was learnt that the nazim, on Tuesday, ordered suspension of the work, and also phoned the irrigation secretary to inform him about the sub-standard quality of work.

QAMBAR PROTEST: A group of protesters, observing a 24hr-long hunger strike in Qambar to pressurize the Sindh government to rename the town a district as well as district headquarters, was replaced by a fresh group of strikers on Wednesday.
