Railways trounce City Club

LAHORE, June 7: Two goals by skipper Zaheer Abbas enabled Railways to beat City Club, Lahore 5-0 in the First National Challenge Cup football championship at the Railways Stadium on Tuesday. Railways, who had defeated the same club in the away tie 8-0, remained unbeaten in pool “C”. The winners led 2-0 in the first half.

Zaheer opened the account in the 24th minute for 1-0 lead.

Muhammad Nasir made it 2-0 in the 40th minute before Zaheer again struck in the 59th minute to make it 3-0. Shahid Bhatti found the target in the 77th minute and Muhammad Akram completed the scoring in the 88th minute.

Meanwhile, at POF Complex, Wah, three goals by Masiullah helped Mehran Club, Islamabad to recover and go on to win beating DFA Eleven Club Gilgit 5-3 in pool “B” match.

The winners drew first blood through Asmatullah in the 18th minute. But the losers equalised two minutes later when Arif Hussain struck.

Masiullah regained the lead 2-1 scoring his first in the 22nd minute but only to see the losers again catch up four minutes later through Munir Ahmad’s goal.

Jamil put Gilgit club 3-2 ahead for the first time when he scored a goal in the 44th minute.

Thereafter, Mehran started the recovery. Nasir Jamil scored a goal in the 84th minute followed by back-to-back goals by Masiullah in the 86th and the 88th minutes.
