FAISALABAD, June 7: Four criminals escaped from the Railway Police custody while the fifth was overpowered and arrested by a constable in Jaranwala. Reports said Jhang district police rounded up alleged outlaws, Shoaib, Arsalan, Ghulam Hussain, Safdar and Ghulam Shabbir, a couple of weeks ago. During interrogation, the accused confessed to have committed a train robbery in Jaranwala tehsil, Faisalabad, on Jan 18 this year.

Jaranwala railway police got judicial remand of the accused and put them in a lock-up.

On Monday night, when ASI Khalid Hussain opened the lock-up door to give meals to the outlaws, they injured him seriously and tried to flee. However, a constable opened fire on the fleeing outlaws, injuring one of them. The constable overpowered the injured, Shoaib, while the other outlaws managed to escape.

Senior police officers, reaching the scene, ordered the arrest of ASI Khalid for negligence in performing his duty.

The police could not get any clue to the outlaws at large yet.

Reports said Shmaiza (5), daughter of Muhammad Iqbal, went missing while playing in the street. On suspicion, Mr Iqbal informed the area police which arrested Ashfaq Ahmed (21).

Ashfaq told the police that he along with his friend Umair Ali abducted the girl, locked her in a room of their house, and sealed her lips with a scarf. He said the girl died before rape. On his identification, the police recovered her body, arrested Umair, two other co-accused Mohsin, Chand Shah and registered a case against them.
