Wasim ousts Mushtaq in third round

LAHORE, June 5: Wapda, Pakistan Air Force (PAF), Army and Navy have won one gold medal each in the 30th national boxing championship under floodlights at the Atiq Stadium on Sunday. In 48kg class, Wapda’s Mohammad Wasim proved too good for Mushtaq Hussain, the only contender from Balochistan who could reach the finals.

Though Mushtaq stood bravely before Wasim in all the three rounds, but the winner won with a wide lead of 37-15 points.

But Wapda, whose four pugilists entered the finals, suffered a loss when Sajid Raja of Pakistan Air Force fought hard to beat Hayatullah (Wapda) in another three-round contest held in 60kg. Sajid remained in front throughout the fight to finally win with 26-20 points.

The defending champion Army, whose six boxers, the highest number, reached the finals won the first gold medal through Faisal Karim in 64kg.

Faisal was declared winner against Jan Mohammad of Karachi Port Trust (KPT) after the referee stopped the contest in the third round. Navy clinched the gold medal in the 69kg weight category when Allah Bux defeated Zubair Hussain of KESC.

Results of finals:

48kg: M. Wasim (Wapda) bt Mushtaq Hussain (Balochistan) on points 37-15.

60kg: Sajid Raja (PAF) bt Hayatullah (Wapda) on points 26-20. 64kg: Faisal Karim (Army) bt Jan Mohammad (KPT) RSC in third round.

69kg: Allah Bux (Navy) bt Zubair Hussain (KESC) RSC in the third round.

SEMIFINALS: 48 kg: Mushtaq Hussain (Balochistan) beat Ushaque Ali (Army) RSC in second round (25-5 points); Muhammad Wasim (Wapda) beat Muhammad Ashraf (Railways) RSC third round (24-4 points).

51 kg: Syed Jawad Ali (Navy) beat Shahid Khan (KPT) RSC third round (31-11 points); Nauman Karim (Army) beat Imran Hafeez (Wapda) RSC third round (26-6 points).

54kg: Abid Jan (KESC) beat Nawaz Dad (Army) on points 35-15; Muhammad Pervaiz (Navy) beat Gul Daraz (Railways) RSC third round (30-12)..

57kg: Sohail Baloch (PAF) walk over against Syed Aziz (Balochistan); Naushad Fateh (KPT) beat Tariq Zia (Army) on points 25-17.

60kg: Sajid Raja (PAF) beat M. Ashfaq (Army) on points 22- 12; Hayatullah (Wapda) beat Zahid Hussain (KPT) on points 30-11.

64kg: Faisal Karim (Army) beat Shahid Khan (Wapda) on points 25-11; Jan Muhammad (KPT) beat Tasawar Abbas (Punjab) retired in first round (6-2).

69kg: Zubair Hussain (KESC) beat Muhammad Ali (Sindh) RSC second round (22-2); Allah Bux (Navy) beat Dur Muhammad (KPT) on points 34-17.

75kg: Ejaz Mahmood (Navy) beat Amir Zada (NWFP) knock out in first round (first knock out of the championship); Saeed Ahmed (Army) beat Manzoor Ahmed (KPT) RSC third round (27-7).

81kg: Ibne Raza (Navy) beat Karim Bux (Railways) on points 41- 25; Tanveer Shaukat (Army) beat Imran Shah (KPT) on points 24-7.

91kg: Saifullah Niazi (Wapda) walk over against Khurram Shahzad (Railways); Shaukat Ali (Army) beat Rashid Minhas (PAF) retired first round.

91kg plus: Abdul Razzak (Army) beat Muhammad Qasim (PAF) RSC first round (7-1); Muzaffar Iqbal (Wapda) beat Ishaq Khan (NWFP) Knock out first round (2nd knock out of the championship).
