Mumtaz Mahal obliges new owner
LAHORE, June 5: Four-year-old dark-bay filly, Mumtaz Mahal, welcomed the change of her ownership when she put up a much improved performance winning the feature event over 1200 metres during the Lahore Summer Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.
Mumtaz Mahal was recently sold by Khawaja M. Arif to Faraz Ahmad Chaudhry and it turned out to be a good bargain for the latter.
Installed as an even-money favourite, after the last-minute withdrawal of Poly Nest from the race, Mumtaz Mahal hit the front 200 metres still to race and then accelerated her pace to win by a big margin of six lengths from Red Rock. Who Dares and Young Emperor completed the frame.
In all, five ran for this sixth race of the day. Mumtaz Mahal clocked one minute 13 1/5 seconds over 1200 metres distance, a performance she had never shown in her career. The winner was steered to storming victory by jockey Shahid Rehman, giving him the fourth winner of the day. Shahid had earlier piloted home Phoenix, Gorey Wah and Safe And Sound, in the first, second and fourth race of the card. Shahid was, however, fined Rs5000 by the stewards for his careless riding on Safe And Sound. After the race jockey Aamar Parvaiz partnering High Dream lodged objection against Shahid for pressing. The objection was overruled by the stewards.
Six favourites obliged the punters when a card of seven races was decided in a hot afternoon.
