Under-17 basketball in last 8 stage


PESHAWAR, June 1: Eight teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the District Youth under-17 basketball championship at St Mary’s on Wednesday. St Mary’s High School, Hayatabad Club, Dreams, Jinnah Model School, Brothers Club, Friends Club, FG Public High School and Government High School No2, Peshawar Cantt were the teams out of 17 who made it to the quarters.

FG Public School will now face Jinnah Model School. Hayatabad Club face Brothers. Friends clash with Government High School No.2, Cantt and Dreams play St Mary’s.

Hayatabad Club and Jinnah Model School fought tooth and nail in the morning session before Hayatabad emerged victors 48-29 after leading 29-14 at halftime.

The winners’ Muhammad Yaqoob scored 23 baskets with four three pointers and Suleman 10 to give his team an early lead over Jinnah. Muhammad scored 12 points with two three pointers and Aamir 11 individual baskets for the losers.

In the other match St Mary’s defeated Shaheen Club 39-30. The winners’ Malik Ihsan scored 10 points, Shan 13 and Zeeshan eight while Ihsan Nazir (10), Ali Haider (10) and Abbas (6) contributed for the losers.

The third match saw Brothers defeating Peshawar Bulls 29-25 before leading 15-10 at halftime. Khalid (14) and Awais (8) were the main scorers for the winners and Safyain (18) and young Irshad (5) scored for the losers.

Irshad displayed fine game enabling Sufyan to make baskets as he dribbled past Peshawar Bulls’ defence.—APP
