Over 400 booked, five held: ‘Attack on police’
GUJRANWALA, June 1: Civil Lines police on Wednesday booked over 400 people, including two women, for attacking a police party, injuring three policemen and setting ablaze an official van. The police also arrested five of the 17 nominated accused and got their seven-day judicial remand from the local anti-terrorism court.
Police also claimed to have recovered illicit arms from the two arrested accused students of matric class, Muhammad Adnan and Tasneem Ahmad, and their neighbours Zulfikar Ali, Muhammad Shafi and Muhammad Usman.
A ninth class student had been killed while three policemen, including an SI, and two passersby were injured in a clash between an enraged mob and law enforcers on Tuesday.
Reports said that two minor girls — Anam and Iram Shehzadi of the Dhulley locality were abducted by accused Muhammad Nawaz and his wife Sharifan Bibi some one-and-a-half-months ago. Later, the accused couple had sold the girls at Rs35,000 in Faisalabad.
On Tuesday, the police arrested the couple from a rented house in Aliabad locality. As the police party brought them out from the house, heirs of two girls and the area people asked the police to hand over the arrested accused to them. When the enraged crowd insisted on its demand, the police reportedly resorted to baton charge to disperse them.
Later, law enforcers reportedly opened fire when the charged mob tried to attack them and snatch from them the arrested accused. As a result, a 9th class student, Imran, died instantly while SI Saeed Ahmad, two constables Irfan and Usman and passersby Ilyas and Aslam received injuries. The angry mob also pelted stones on the police party and also set ablaze their van.
Meanwhile, the body of the student was handed over to his heirs after autopsy. He was later buried at a local graveyard in the presence of scores of people.
Manzoor Husain, the deceased’s father, said that he would register a murder case against the police.
