Capel upstages rivals to claim 100m crown

PALO ALTO (California), May 31: Reigning world 200 metres champion John Capel won the 100 metres title here on Monday at the US Open athletics championship and fellow American John Godina won the meet shot put crown for the fifth time in a row Capel, aided by a 1.3 m/s tailwind, won in 10.08 with Jamaica’s Dwight Thomas second in 10.12 and American Brian Lewis third in 10.16.

Capel will try to qualify for the World Championships in the 100 metres and 200 metres at the US Championships in 3 1/2 weeks at Carson, California. He hopes to follow Maurice Greene and Marion Jones in taking both world sprint crowns.

“It’s extremely important to me. It would be the best thing ever to double like Mo and Marion did,” Capel said. “That would be awesome.”

To have his chance, Capel will have to withstand eight gruelling qualifying races at the US meet. That’s why he raced here on the US Memorial Day.

Three-time world shot put champion Godina won with a 21.93 metres effort, second in the world this year to give him the four best distances in the world in 2005.

Dominique Arnold won the 110 metres hurdles in 13.21 and David Krummenacker won the 800 metres in 1:45.19.
