Published June 1, 2005

ISLAMABAD, May 31: A survey conducted by Pakistan Medical Research Council (PMRC) on awareness of HIV/Aids in Pakistan has indicated that knowledge about transmission of the disease was very poor among both the urban and rural areas in all provinces and AJK.

“Pakistan Health Education Survey” was conducted to assess the impact of health education campaigns on the knowledge, attitudes and practices of people relating to important health issues.

Samples of 7,000 household were drawn from Islamabad, Punjab, Sindh, NWFP, Balochistan and AJK excluding FATA and military restricted areas during the survey.

It was found that awareness level relating to transmission of HIV infection from a pregnant mother to newborn was 11 per cent for urban and eight per cent for rural respondents, while 16 per cent were of the opinion that HIV positive mothers should not bear children.
