HYDERABAD, May 31: Enraged activists of the Jafria Alliance Pakistan burnt tyres and smashed windowpanes of vehicles in Latifabad-9 and outside the Shahbaz Building on Monday night and Tuesday morning in protest against a suicide attack on the Madinat-ul-Ilm Mosque in Karachi.

Residents of the Sadaat colony, Latifabad-9, took to the streets in the area and shopkeepers closed their shops.

They burnt tyres and pelted vehicles on roads with stones.

They blocked the road for some time before police dispersed them. Tension prevailed in the area.

The activists also smashed windowpanes of some shops in Latifabad-7 in the jurisdiction of A-section police station.

Police arrested Faisal, son of Munir, and he was detained at the GOR police station.

Cases were being lodged at the GOR, A-section and Cantonment police stations.

On Tuesday, about a dozen protesters blocked the Thadi Sarak outside the Shahbaz Building and pelted vehicular traffic with stones, smashing windowpanes of an auto rickshaw and a bus.

A rickshaw driver was injured.

They also burnt tyres on the main road before being dispersed by police.

The DPO chaired a meeting of taluka police officers and SHOs of the city putting them on high alert since Monday night.

The police officials were asked to be present in their areas during different timings of prayers.

They were also issued instructions through hand-bills prepared earlier.

The police force was deployed at mosques and imambargahs since last night.

MMA: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal on Tuesday held a big demonstration outside the press club against the murder of JI leaders Aslam Mujahid and Tahir Jamal and terrorist attack on the Madinat-ul-Ilm mosque in Karachi.

Speaking on the occasion, MNA Khair Mohammad said their blood would not go in vain.

He criticized the MQM and said it could not hold Karachi and Hyderabad as hostage by resorting to terrorism.

He said the people of the two cities had now rejected them.

He said it was an irony that the rulers were supporting the terrorists.

MMA leader Waheed Qureshi said bomb blasts at the Mazar of Bari Imam and Madinat-ul-Ilm and murder of Tahir Jamal and Aslam Mujahid were the chains of same conspiracy.

He demanded that the Sindh government should resign as it had miserably failed in controlling lawlessness in the province.

MPA Rehman Rajput warned the government that if the atrocities against MMA workers were not checked the rulers would be thrown out of power.

He demanded that the identity of the arrested person who had attacked Madinat-ul-Ilm along with others should be disclosed.

Jamaat-i-Islami leader Shaikh Shaukat Ali, JUP leader Ibrahim Shaikh, JUI leaders Azam Jehangiri, Khalid Dhamrah and Hifzur Rehman Shams and Shia Ulema council leader Nizamul Hyderi spoke on the occasion.

Meanwhile, Shia Ulema council leaders Kazim Hussain Shah Naqvi, Hakim Ibrar Hussain and Sher Ali Shah in a joint statement condemned the murder of Jamaat-i-Islami leaders, Aslam Mujahid and Jamal Tahir and attack on Madinatul Ilm mosque.

They said all these terrorist activities including bomb blast on the Mazar of Bari Imam were masterminded by the American agents.

They said the basic objective of these despicable incidents was to create rift among the Muslims.
