American Leonard survives scare before winning


MEMPHIS (Tennessee), May 30: American Justin Leonard survived a nervous finish and a furious late charge from defending champion David Toms to claim a thrilling one-stroke victory at the St Jude Classic on Sunday.

Leonard, who began the day with a commanding eight-stroke lead, needed all his advantage, completing the final round at the TPC at Southwind with a three-over 73 without a single birdie.

After carding just one bogey through his first three rounds, the former British Open champion had three on the last day as he staggered to the finish line with a 14-under 266.

CABRERA TRIUMPHS

VIRGINIA WATER: Argentina’s Angel Cabrera held off a strong challenge from Irishman Paul McGinley to win the BMW Championship by two shots on Sunday.

Cabrera, joint leader overnight with Swede Peter Hedblom, fired a five-under-par 67 to secure his first European Tour title in three years with a 72-hole total of 15-under 273.

The 35-year-old from Cordoba, whose last win came three years ago, effectively sealed the third Tour title of his career with three birdies in the last eight holes at an overcast but relatively calm Wentworth Club.
