JHANG, May 30: An assistant sub-inspector of the Qadirpur police was arrested after a case was registered against him on court orders for keeping two women in illegal detention. Petitioner Yousaf, the son of one of the women, stated that Mandi Shah Jewna post in-charge ASI Javed Iqbal along with five others raided their house in Chak Daulat Khan on May 28. As the male members were not at home, the police picked Fatima and Zulekhan and took them to a Dera from where they were taken to the Shah Jewna police post.

When the relatives approached the ASI along with some notables, he refused to release them. The husbands of the detainees contacted Advocate Munir Ahmad Sadhana, the chairman of local NGO Roshan Pakistan Foundation, who helped them file a habeas corpus petition in the court of the district and sessions judge.

The judge appointed a bailiff who recovered the women from the police post and produced them in the court. After recording their statements, the court ordered registration of a case against the ASI.

DEATH SENTENCE: The additional district and sessions judge on Monday awarded death sentence to a convict and life term to his brother in a murder case.

According to the prosecution, Jamil and Khalil along with two accomplices had stabbed to death Naseer in Jhang city some time back.

The court awarded death sentence to Jamil and life term to Khalil. Two other accused, Abdul Qayyum and Nazir, were fined Rs8,000 and Rs2,000, respectively.

TWO DIE ON ROAD: Two persons were killed and nine others injured in a road accident near Chiniot on Sunday.

A pick-up was on its way to Chiniot when it overturned after hitting a tree near Burjian. Mohammad Yar and Noor Samad died on the spot, while nine others sustained injuries.

The injured were taken to a hospital from where three of them were shifted to the Allied Hospital, Faisalabad, owing to serious condition.
