LARKANA, May 30: Some 84,284 girl students studying in middle and secondary schools of Larkana and Shahdadkot districts in class six, seven and eight may not receive their scholarship as the summer vacation is starting from June 1. It was mandatory to disburse the scholarship amount among girl students under the Sindh Education Reforms plan before the start of summer vacations.

Sources in the district government told Dawn that late transmission of data had delayed the plan.

A programme officer in the Sindh finance department in a letter to district nazims on May 16 said that executive district officers of 13 districts had delayed sending reports.

The districts include Nawabshah, Naushahro Feroze, Sukkur, Shikarpur, Khairpur, Larkana, Dadu, Ghotki, Jacobabad, Badin, Thatta and Karachi. The sanctioned amount under the SER plan was Rs10,919,350.

The finance department had released the amount in November 2004 and was placed at the disposal of local officers.

Sources said it remained unutilized with the district treasury office for the last six months and its cheque was passed by the treasury on May 30.

In year 2003-04 budget each child got Rs1,000 but this year each child would get Rs889 due to shrink in the amount.

The district government had proposed education officials to keep open schools for two days more so that scholarships could be distributed.

ARRESTED: Police on Monday arrested two alleged robbers after they had hijacked a motorcycle from Ahmed Ali Brohi near the girls’ college.

The Market police recovered two TT pistols and the motorcycle from them.
