KARACHI, May 30: After a gap of 13 years a PMDC inspection team here on Monday visited the Dow Medical College, which through a Sindh government order has been upgraded as university of health sciences in 2003. A 14 member PMDC team, with Prof Fazal Ahmed of Khyber Medical College as its convener and other senior professionals, none below the level of professor in different specialities, took an extensive round of the DUHS facilities including its computerized library, departments - their laboratories besides surgical and medical units.
Prior to the very exercise, DUHS Vice-Chancellor Prof Masood Hameed briefed the team about the envisaged projects which the DUHS had already undertaken or about to initiate in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission or different institutions.
The vice-chancellor said that since the establishment of the university a research department, headed by a research director, had been put into function offering registration to the outstanding medical graduates.
According to him a research project being conducted jointly by the DUHS, National Institute of Health (USA) and the Aga Khan University has been initiated at the gynaecology department of the Civil Hospital, Karachi.
Prof Hameed also referred to the university’s Continuing Medical Education Programme focussing on over 100 programmes during a period of 18 months for undergraduate, postgraduate and faculty members of the university. CMR programme for family physicians was also said to be among the long list of the DUHS activities.
Prof Fazal Ahmed in his brief comments appreciated the measures being taken for the elevation of the university with the hope that it would go a long way in context of teaching, learning and research programmes.—APP
