Divided Kashmir ‘unacceptable’

By Our Staff Reporter

LAHORE, May 29: Any division of Kashmir will not be acceptable to people of Pakistan. This was stated by speakers, including Amanullah Khan, HRCP Director I.A. Rehman, Justice Sharif Husain and Saad Rafiq, at a seminar here on Sunday.

They said the visit by an All Parties Hurriat Conference delegation, sans the Gillani faction, would not serve the purpose of confidence building.

They also rejected President Pervaiz Musharraf’s proposals on Kashmir along with other formulae floated by European Union countries.

Kashmir Action Committee President Sharif Husain Bukhari said the Kashmiris had been suffering for long. Pakistan and India might have some interest in natural resources of Kashmir, but people of the Valley were facing an aggression by Indian forces as well as that of militants.

He said Kashmir did not consider militants as mujahideen. Some Kashmiris wanted to join Pakistan, but they wanted it on their own terms and conditions, he said.

He urged the Pakistani leadership to consult “all Kashmiris” before reaching any decision with the Indians.

I.A. Rehman said Pakistan and India along with some other countries wanted to divide Kashmir, but it would not be acceptable to the Kashmiris.

He said the Kashmiris were struggling for independence, but Pakistan and India wanted to keep them under their own thumb. In the absence of the Gillani faction, talks would not be considered successful. He said the Kashmir issue was a political problem, but unfortunately, the fundamentalists had turned it into a religious one.

The JKLF chairman said the Kashmiris would not accept division of their land at any cost.
