JI worker, underworld member shot dead

KARACHI, May 29: An alleged member of underworld and a local leader of Jamaat-i- Islami were shot dead by gunmen in different areas of the city on Sunday night. The alleged member of underworld, Jawed Bashir alias Jawed Mohajir, was shot dead in front of Amber Auditorium, Bahadurabad in the limits of New Town police station. Police termed it target killing.

Jawed was once affiliated with the Muttahida Quami Movement but he parted ways with it in 1992. Later, police claimed, he joined an underworld network.

In the other incident, a local leader of Jamaat-i-Islami was shot dead in Landhi. Police said Jamal Tahir was returning home after attending inauguration of a dual carriageway at Singer Chowrangi when two unidentified men intercepted his car and killed him. Police sources said that the victim was once chief of banned Hizbul Mujahideen in Karachi.—Staff Reporter
