Leonard opens five-shot lead


MEMPHIS (Tennessee), May 28: Justin Leonard is threatening to run away with the St Jude Classic after firing a second round five-under par 65 on Friday widening his lead to five strokes over Swede Fredrik Jacobson. The American, who shot a sizzling opening round eight-under 62 to hold a two-stroke overnight lead, had a par, birdie, bogey roller coaster start to his day but was error free the rest of the way at the TPC at Southwind leaving him on 13-under 127.

American Paul Goydos, whose only PGA Tour win was in 1996 at the Bay Hill Invitational and who is playing on a medical exemption after hip surgery last year, vaulted into contention with a four-under 66 to stand in third place on seven-under 133.

HEDBLOM LEADS

VIRGINIA WATER (England): Sweden’s Peter Hedblom shot a sparkling seven-under-par 65 in the BMW Championship second round to surge into a three-stroke lead on Friday.

After moving to 11-under-par 133, three shots ahead of Ireland’s Ryder Cup player Paul McGinley, Hedblom is on course for only his second tour title following the 1996 Moroccan Open.
