Ruling party splits over city council division

By Our Correspondent

GUJRANWALA, May 28: The ruling PML is divided into two groups over the issue of the division of city tehsil council into four towns. It is learnt that most MPAs and some office-bearers wanted to bifurcate the city while others wanted to retain the present setup. They have reportedly sent their proposals to the government.

On the other hand, it is said that parliamentarians of remote areas wanted to split up the city into towns comprising rural areas of their own choice to take advantage in the coming local body elections.

Some nazims and naib nazims of union councils, PPP’s Zahid Pervaiz and Lala Shakilur Rehman and organizations of traders and citizens were opposing the division of the city council. They have threatened to launch a movement if the provincial government approved the division.

However, MPA Mian Mazhar Javed supported the ruling party men who were in favour of dividing the city council.

He was of the views that rural and urban areas would develop equally following the division of the city council.

The provincial government has not yet decide whether to divide the city council.
