Inquiry against jail officials in progress

By Shamim Shamsi

Sukkur, May 28: A high-level inquiry is in progress against the superintendent and other officials of the Sukkur central jail-I for allegedly depriving inmates of cash, mobile phones, TV sets and other valuables. This was stated by Sukkur Prisons DIG Ghulam Hussain Khoso while talking to Dawn here on Saturday.

He said the inquiry report would be submitted within shortest possible time after which action would be taken against officials concerned.

He said certain suspended officials of the jail were exerting pressure to stop the inquiry which had caused delay in submitting the report to the home department and the Sindh IGP. He blamed the suspended officials for negligence in duty. He said the inmates had complained to the Prisons IG and him about looting of their valuables by the officials.

Mr Khoso said it still was a mystery who was behind the attack on the jail colony and the house of jailer Liaqat Pirzada.

He said police were investigating the matter and if it was found that the attack was aimed at deviating attention from the actual incident, the people concerned would be taken to task.

He said he had asked jail superintendent Ashiq Bozdar to quit the charge on Friday. He further said the jail superintendent had been shifted on orders of the Prisons IG after consultation with the home department.

He said FIRs of the two jail incidents had not been registered because during negotiations with inmates, the authorities had promised that no FIR would be registered against them.

The suspended officials, jailer Liaqat Pirzada, chief warden Shafiq, Naik Haji Ahmad, constable Himmath Ali Jagirani, Sarfaraz Korai and Meo Khan Chachar, had been asked to vacate official quarters immediately.

FOUR KILLED: Four people, two of them women, were gunned down and a child was injured by armed men in Massan Paro, Pano Akil town, on the midnight of Friday and Saturday.

The motive behind the murders was said to be an old enmity between two rival groups.

Police sources claimed three sons of notorious bandit Gulzar Dawani Chachar were involved in the crime.

They said armed men entered the house of Ellahi Bux Chachar after scaling the wall and launched an armed attack when the family was asleep.
