Kharian nazim yet to be traced

By Our Correspondent

GUJRAT, May 28: The Kharian Cantonment police have failed to trace the people, who had allegedly facilitated absconding Kharian Tehsil Nazim Nadeem Asghar Kaira in signing official documents of Kharian, Lalamusa and Dinga municipalities after registration of a case against him.

The Cantonment police had registered a case under various sections against Tehsil Nazim Nadeem Kaira, Naveed Zaman Kaira, Ghulam Dastagir, Raza Mohyuddin and seven unidentified people on the complaint of SHO Ghulam Jaffar on April 14.

The complainant alleged in the FIR that the nazim and others attacked the police station and beat him up in a bid to get PPP office-bearer Zia Mohyuddin released. The police, later, nominated Shahzad, Zafar, Babar and councillor, Basharat, in the supplementary FIR. However, they failed to nominate the remaining suspects.

All nominated suspects, except the tehsil nazim, had been granted bails by an anti-terrorism court. The nazim was declared a court fugitive by the ATC on April 28. Later, the provincial secretary for local government sacked him because of continuous absence from office.

Sources told Dawn on Saturday that the nazim had signed official documents, including bills of contractors, till May 5. They claimed that the contractors had withdrawn huge amounts from the treasury after getting their bills passed by the tehsil nazim, who is the final authority.

They said the contractors and officials had handed over the documents to some of Mr Kaira’s close relatives, who sought the nazim’s signatures.

According to another source, the nazim’s relatives got his signatures on some of the documents while they signed many others by themselves and returned those to the contractors. Even the bills with fake signatures had been drawn from the treasury, the source said.

Sources said the facilitators must be aware of the nazim’s whereabouts. According to rules, they said, no politician could sign any official document after registration of a case against him. Thus, they said, the nazim had committed another offence.

CORRUPTION: Meanwhile, the Lalamusa city police have yet to arrest a former vice-chairman of the local municipality and his son in a case registered against them two weeks ago. They have allegedly received bribe from the two to let them off the hook.

The city police had instituted a case under sections 506, 342, 379, 148 and 149 of PPC against Sheikh Abdul Khalil, his son Sheikh Khalid, Shahid Sialvi and 30 unidentified people on the complaint of Raja Yasir Kamal on May 14. Sub-inspector Mian Riaz is investigating the case.

It is learnt that the three nominated suspects are freely moving in the city despite being on interim bails. Sheikh Khalil daily sits at his outhouse and was also present at a rally in Lalamusa on Friday in the presence of the investigator and SHO Muhammad Anwar.

Similarly, his son Sheikh Khalid sits at his office at a filling station on the GT Road near Ali Chak.

Sources said the suspects had greased the palms of the SHO and the SI to get relief in the case.
