KARACHI, May 28: Four alleged kidnappers were gunned down in what police claimed to be an encounter early on Saturday morning when the police raided a bungalow in Gulistan-i-Jauhar to rescue a kidnapped doctor. The industrial crime unit (ICU) of the police got a tip-off that some people had made a doctor hostage at a bungalow in PIA Society near Pehlwan Goth in Gulistan-i-Jauhar.
The police, headed by DSP Aslam Khan, raided the spotted bungalow to rescue the kidnapped doctor.
The swift action on the part of police baffled the kidnappers, who started firing at the police.
The police said they returned the fire killing all of the four kidnappers on the spot. The police recovered two Kalashnikov rifles and two TT pistols. The blindfolded doctor, who remained unhurt, was fastened with chains and made to sit in a room.
Dr Manesh Kumar had been kidnapped on May 19 while he was going to drop his friend Asha from the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre to Askari IV, the police said and added that four armed men intercepted his car, dropped Asha, and whisked away Dr Manesh with his car. No ransom demand was received from the kidnappers despite the fact he had been kidnapped nine days back.
However, Dr Manesh told the police that his captors kept on telling him that a deal was being made with his family.
DSP Aslam Khan said that the identity of the four kidnappers has not been established so far and the motive of the kidnapping was simply the ransom money.
The bodies of the alleged kidnappers were sent to a hospital for autopsy and later kept at Edhi morgue for identification purpose.
SP Farooq Awan, in-charge of the Anti-Violence Crime Cell, said that a case for kidnapping was registered with Frere police station on the day the doctor was kidnapped. However, the kidnappers might have been taking time to build pressure on family to demand a heavy amount of ransom money.
