Feeble Bangladesh heading for massive defeat
LONDON, May 27: Marcus Trescothick and Michael Vaughan plundered centuries before England’s bowlers left an inept Bangladesh side teetering on the edge of an innings defeat after the second day of the first Test at Lord’s on Friday. Trescothick, with 194, and Vaughan, 120, put on 255 for the second wicket to set up England’s total of 528 for three declared, scored at almost five an over.
Bangladesh, needing 420 to make the home side bat again, then imploded for the second time in the match to close on 90 for five. They made 108 in their first innings.
England’s total dominance underlined an unpalatable gulf in quality between the sides. Vaughan’s men, with 12 wins in their last 16 Tests and just one defeat, will have learnt little before the Ashes starting in July.
At least Vaughan and Trescothick enjoyed a profitable work-out in the middle. The two came into the game short of form and took full advantage of the gifts on offer.
The left-handed Trescothick, seeking a second Test double century, batted for just over six hours and hit 92 in boundaries.
For Vaughan, it was a 14th Test hundred and his third in consecutive innings at Lord’s. It also came in the England captain’s 100th Test innings and ended a 10-month run without reaching three figures.
Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore had said that the score during his side’s Lord’s debut would not matter so long as his players kept learning.
On Friday they learnt that their fielders have butter fingers, that their captain Habibul Bashar suffers from suicidal batting tendencies and that they have just one player, in Mashrafe Mortaza, who looks the part.
A right-armer with a pleasant action generating decent pace, he had trapped Andrew Strauss lbw for 69 on Thursday and spat one off a length after lunch on Friday to account for Vaughan, caught behind.
Vaughan had been dropped on eight on Thursday. His wicket made it 403 for two and it was soon 415 for three when a tiring Trescothick — spilled by Mortaza off his own bowling after making 87 — edged a cut behind off Mohammad Rafique’s left-arm spin.
Ian Bell was 65 not out and Graham Thorpe unbeaten on 42 when Vaughan declared.
Bangladesh’s hopes of saving face on their second visit quickly evaporated. With 22 overs remaining, they lost their top order.
Nafis Iqbal, on three, edged Matthew Hoggard to second slip and straight into Andrew Flintoff’s hands.
Habibul Bashar, a gifted batsman who had thrown away his wicket in the first innings, then inexplicably did it again. After two pulled boundaries, he shovelled fast bowler Simon Jones’s first ball straight to square leg.
Jones, who had taken one for four off six overs in the first innings, struck again with his seventh ball when Thorpe at short leg threw himself smartly to his left and caught a Javed Omar prod one-handed.
Harmison, disappointing with the ball, outdid that in a rare appearance in the gully, diving forward and extending a telescopic arm to get rid of Mohammad Ashraful for two.
Bangladesh’s misery was complete when Mushfiqur Rahim, surprised by a Flintoff lifter, was caught behind.
The second and final Test starts next Friday.
