Hampshire defeated in two days
LONDON, May 27: A Heath Streak-inspired Warwickshire consigned English county championship leaders Hampshire to a 10-wicket defeat within two days on Thursday. The Zimbabwe bowler took six wickets for 31 runs as Hampshire crashed to 124, England’s Test reject Kevin Pietersen only managing a duck.
Australia leg spinner Shane Warne appeared to have swung the momentum in favour of Hampshire taking six for 88 as Nick Knight’s side were bowled out for 265, a lead of 81.
But the Hampshire batting fell apart again, and Warwickshire’s Knight and Ian Westwood wrapped up the win in just 16 minutes, knocking off the required 44 in 28 balls.
Nottinghamshire will be looking to put pressure on the leaders after taking control at Bristol and forcing Gloucestershire to follow on.
David Hussey ran out of partners and was stranded on 98 when the visitors were bowled out but their 469 total looked commanding.
The hosts were then dismissed for 250, with Ryan Sidebottom the pick of the bowlers with four for 65.
Following on, Gloucestershire then lost Phil Weston and Stephen Adshead to finish the day on three for two, still needing 216 runs to make Notts bat again.
Sussex struggled against Middlesex at Hove after an early struggle to wrap up the visitors’ first innings.
Ben Hutton’s side were eventually dismissed for 401, adding 74 in the morning session with just two wickets remaining.
The hosts were then reduced to 206 for five by the close of play, with Murray Goodwin (67) and skipper Chris Adams (72) crucially dismissed.
Rikki Clarke’s century gave Surrey a slender lead against Kent in Tunbridge Wells.
Resuming on 22 without loss in their first innings, Clarke’s 124 guided the visitors to 324 all out, with Min Patel taking six for 124.
That gave Surrey a first-innings lead of 62, and Kent were 37 for one at the end of the second day.
In Division Two, Essex veteran Darren Gough returned to haunt his former club Yorkshire at Headingley.
Gough started the day at the crease after completing night-watchman duties on day one, and smashed his way to 93 to put the visitors in command.
Andy Flower progressed to 188 and James Foster added 92 before Essex declared on 622 for eight. The hosts were reduced to 53 for two by stumps, with Phil Jaques and Matthew Wood departing.
Jason Brown’s six-wicket haul gave Northamptonshire a first-innings lead against Somerset at Wantage Road.
The visitors began their first innings at the start of the day and were bowled out for 356, Ian Blackwell top scoring with 59.
The hosts moved to 25 for one by stumps with Bilal Shafayat the man out, and they now lead by 77 runs.
Derbyshire struggled on the first day against Leicestershire at the County Ground before declaring on 251 for nine.
Michael Di Venuto was the only batsman to reach the half-century mark, although he was supported by Graeme Welch (42).
Leicestershire were five without loss in reply, safely negotiating the two over before the close of play.
