MEMPHIS (Tennessee), May 27: Former British Open champion Justin Leonard fired a flawless eight-under-par 62 to grab the clubhouse lead in the first round of the St Jude Classic in Memphis, Tennessee on Thursday. Leonard, a winner this season at the Bob Hope Classic, ripped apart the front nine at Southwind course, carding six birdies, and added two more after the turn to complete an error free afternoon.
The 32-year-old American got made a bright start with birdies on the first three holes to sit four shots clear of compatriot Davis Love III, who was at four-under through eight holes.
A group of eight players led by last year’s runner-up Bob Estes were all in the clubhouse at three-under 67.
Defending champion David Toms, attempting to become the first to win the St Jude three years in a row, was one shot further adrift on two-under 68.
Kenny Perry, who romped to a seven-shot victory at the Colonial, made a slow starting as he slipped to two-over through seven holes.
