Durrani says he will abide by MMA decision: NSC meeting

PESHAWAR, May 27: NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani has said that the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal’s supreme council would decide whether he would participate in the National Security Council meeting on June 8. “I will attend the NSC meeting if allowed by the supreme council. I won’t participate if disallowed by the council, because the MMA’s interests are dearer to me,” said the chief minister at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the District Headquarters Hospital Nowshera on Thursday.
He said that the MMA-led government in the Frontier province had started upgrading the tehsil and district headquarters hospitals as it wanted to provide treatment facilities to people at their doorstep and reduce the patient load on other hospitals.
“All the district headquarters hospitals are being developed as A-grade institutes so that people can get specialist treatment within their own districts,” he said.
MMA leader Qazi Hussain Ahmed was among those present. Also present were several ministers including Sirajul Haq, Inayatullah Khan, Kashif Azam, Hussain Ahmad Kanju, Fazale Rabbani.
Mr Durrani told the gathering that three cancer hospitals were being built in the province—one each at Swat, Dera Ismail Khan and Hazara—owing to the increasing number of cancer patients. Furthermore, he spoke about plans to build a state-of-the-art hospital for heart ailments in Peshawar. He said that patients would be provided free treatment at all these hospitals.
According to Mr Durrani, the province is likely to get Rs18 billion instead of Rs6 billion in net hydel profits. He expressed confidence that the province would witness a number of development activities once this amount was received.
He claimed that the MMA government had reached the corridors of power through the peoples’ mandate and that it would leave no stone unturned to provide basic amenities to the people.
“It was due to the extreme popularity of the MMA in the Frontier province that our candidate won the National Assembly election in Malakand despite the fact that the federal government had diverted huge resources to defeat the MMA’s nominee”, he said.
According to him, the six-party alliance was intact and it had become the voice of the oppressed people in the country. Claiming that the MMA had assumed the shape of a movement, he said the alliance would sweep the next local bodies and general election in the country.
Mr Durrani expressed satisfaction with the role of opposition parties in the provincial assembly and said the government had responded well to the opposition by releasing development funds to all members on an equitable basis.
