‘South Asia economy fails to improve health sector’
ISLAMABAD, May 27: Economic growth in South Asia has not translated into better health for majority of the population, says a report prepared by Mahbubul Haq Human Development Centre. The report, titled ‘Human Development in South Asia 2004: the Health Challenge’, is the eighth in a series of the annual South Asia Human Development Report. It provides a critical analysis of economic growth and human development in the region.
The report analyses the condition of health of children, women and the poor in South Asia, and comes to the conclusion that unless health delivery system is made more efficient, effective and accountable, South Asia’s current economic growth will neither be equitable nor sustainable in the long run.
The condition of health sector in Pakistan is discussed in detail in one chapter which should be an eye-opener for all those concerned with policymaking and advocacy.
Despite numerous attempts over the past decades to improve health conditions, Pakistan still scores lower than most other countries in health indicators.
The report will be formally launched on May 30 at a local hotel. High-level government officials, representatives of diplomatic missions and international institutions and members from the academic community and civil society are expected to participate in the ceremony.
