Judge disallows fifth marriage

By Our Correspondent

RIYADH, May 27: Officials at a government department in Jeddah were taken by surprise when an old man came to the office to register his new wife. The problem was that the woman would have been his fifth wife. The supervisor transferred the problem to the court, which did not allow the man to have more than four wives at the same time. The judge told the man that if he wanted to marry again, he must divorce one of the four.

The petitioner then requested for some time, finally deciding to divorce his first wife. He said he needed the new wife because she was an excellent cook.

SUICIDE BID: A mute woman in her 20s tried to commit suicide by drinking a cleaning liquid, the Al Madinah paper reported. The woman accused her husband of threatening to marry another woman.

Although she is mute, her husband had accused her of talking too much and never listening to him. She accuses him of extreme selfishness, alleging that he does not spend money on her and opposes the use of the airconditioner in the summer to save on electricity.
