Nankana’s status still ambiguous
SHEIKHUPURA, May 26: The status of Nankana Sahib as a district is still not clear, as the government has not issued notification to the effect. None of the district government officials is certain about the decision, which was announced almost a month ago.
Meanwhile, the government is considering a plan to make Nankana a model city, reportedly, to please the Sikh community coming here to pay tribute to Baba Guru Nanak. The elected representative, including MNAs, MPAs, district and tehsil nazims, however, are not pleased with the demarcation of the new district.
They say they will face a great deal of difficulty in the election because of the division of their vote bank. Meanwhile, political circles in the district are making all-out efforts to ensure that their areas of influence are not included in the new district.
A majority of local lawyers, too, is against the decision.
DBA PROTEST: The District Bar Association, Sheikhupura, has protested against lawlessness in the city.
At an emergent meeting, chaired by Advocate Inayatullah Sheikh on Thursday, the lawyers condemned a robbery at the house of their colleague, Mian Khalid Mahmood Naseem.
They said four robbers stormed into Mian Khalid’s house at Stadium Park on Wednesday night, held up the family and took away ornaments and other valuables worth Rs700,000.
They said lawlessness had assumed an alarming proportion, as the police had failed to take any action despite patrolling nearby residential areas. The participants demanded through a resolution that the police should identify and apprehend the culprits.
SHOT DEAD: A man was shot dead by four dacoits at Rehmanpura early on Thursday.
Reports said Muhammad Sharif, who had come to visit his son Amanat, was returning from mosque after saying Fajr prayers when four armed men shot him dead on resistance.
