KHAIRPUR, May 26: About two dozen organizations of traders have decided to launch a protest campaign against Hesco and the railways department. Speaking at a press conference here on Thursday, Anjuman-i-Tajiran president Qutubuddin Shaikh, Hussain Bux Abbasi and Chaudhry Sajid Hussain said the drive would start from May 27 with displaying protest banners in the city.

They said that 10-hour loadshedding was being carried out for the last two months which had affected trade activities. The said damaged meters were being given to consumers while Hesco was issuing the detection bills.

They said the Kunda system was continuing with the connivance of Hesco officials. They said poor consumers were facing hardships whereas influential were given relief. They said the Anjuman had provided a water-cooler, benches and other material at the Khairpur railway station but only six of the 15 trains on the route stopped at the station.

As a result, a majority of the residents travel from Rohri to Karachi or any other city. They said a token shutter-down strike would be observed from June 5 to 12 for 3 hours daily.

VIRUS: A virus described as “lesser date moth” has attacked date palm gardens in the district, resulting into shedding of date fruit from bunches.

This was disclosed at a seminar of date growers here on Wednesday. The growers have been advised to irrigate gardens frequently in order to avoid shedding of fruit. Speaking at the seminar, Therhi UC Nazim Qazi Aziz said the farmers had sustained heavy losses due to inefficiency of the agriculture department.
