DHAKA, May 25: The High Court of Bangladesh on Tuesday directed the government and the Election Commission (EC) to make it mandatory for parliamentary candidates to provide their personal information about academic qualifications, criminal records, assets and sources of income to the EC along with their nomination forms.
A division bench passed the order on a writ petition filed as public interest litigation by three lawyers practising in the Supreme Court.
Late last month, the court issued a rule on the government, Election Commission and secretary of the parliament secretariat to explain why they should not be directed to make the provision mandatory.
