Pakistan ‘A’ clinch one-day series

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, May 24: Pakistan ‘A’ ended their African tour on a winning note when they defeated Zimbabwe ‘A’ by 82 runs in the third and final one-day match at the Country Club in Harare on Monday. By virtue of this result, Pakistan ‘A’ won the limited-overs rubber 2-1 after winning both unofficial Tests against the Zimbabweans.

The 50-over match was reduced to a 40-over-a-side affair because of inclement weather.

Batting first, after winning the toss, the tourists built on a fine opening partnership between Ashar Zaidi and Naumanullah to reach a daunting 246 for nine.

Ashar, the left-handed opener, made 67 off 101 balls with six boundaries. Nauman, the elegant tall right-hander, was more aggressive as he scored 54 off 50 balls, including five fours and three sixes.

Misbah also reached a quick half-century. The ex-Test right-hander blasted four fours and a brace of sixes on his way to 58 off only 38 deliveries.

Anthony Ireland, a right-arm medium-pacer, was the pick of Zimbabwe bowlers with excellent figures of four for 40 in eight overs. Fellow paceman Blessing Mahwire chipped in with two for 48.

Zimbabwe ‘A’, after a solid start, lost wickets steadily to be all out for 164 in 36 overs. Keith Dabengwa and skipper Stuart Carlisle each contributed 33, but apart from Vusi Sibanda (26) and Mark Vermeulen (21) nobody else managed to cross 20.

Leg-spinner Mansoor Amjad was yet again Zimbabwe’s tormentor with a haul of four for 47 in eight overs with useful support from part-time off-spinner Naumanullah, who snared 18.
