Sana slams double to help team lift cup
LAHORE, May 24: Centre-forward Sana Javed slammed the double to give Lahore Whites a 2-0 win over Faisalabad Whites and annex the Chief Minister’s Gold Cup women’s hockey tournament at the National Hockey Stadium on Tuesday. The winners led the first half 1-0 and added the second goal in the second half.
Faisalabad Whites, undoubtedly, put up a spirited resistance to their far superior rivals but failed in cashing in on chances. Lahore too failed to show their true game. Both the teams had resorted to rough play turning the final into a dull show.
The Lahore Whites’ forward-line - captain Rabia Qadir, Ayesha Arif, Sana, Razia Malik and Neelma Hussain - however, showed some quality game launching repeated attacks to rescue their defence-line whenever it faced danger.
Sana opened the account giving Lahore Whites an early lead in the 5th minute. She received a fine pass from international Razia in the circle and deflected it into the cage with an angular push.
Sana, who was later adjudged the Woman-of-the-Final and received a cash prize of Rs2,000 missed two sitters while her team also misfired three penalty corners before the halftime. Yet they managed to maintain the slim 1-0 lead till the breather.
In the second half, Faisalabad Whites showed an improved game. Their key scorer Azra had her cheekbone hurt in an attempt to slam an equaliser in the 45th minute.
She, however, returned after getting first-aid, but it could hardly aid her team as the Lahore Whites had by then doubled the lead in the 50th minute.
Sana scored her second goal converting the seventh and last short-corner off an indirect try while Faisalabad Whites wasted all the four short-corners, they had got.
Lahore Whites’ skipper Rabia received the glittering trophy and a cash prize of Rs10,000. The runners-up skipper Leena Afroze pocketed Rs5,000.
Earlier, Lahore Colours outplayed Bahawalpur 5-0 to earn third spot and a cash prize of Rs3,000.
Ghazala Parveen (5th minute), Hina Kanwal (9th minute), Zarwa Ahmed (13th minute), Nausheen Arif (46th minute) and Amna Khan (50th minute) were the scorers.
Saman Rasheed of Lahore Whites was declared the best goal-keeper of the tournament, and Azra of Faisalabad the best scorer of the tournament. They received Rs2,000 each.
Lahore Whites’ Razia Malik was declared the best player of the tournament and received Rs5,000.
