Tension persists on PMC campus

FAISALABAD, May 24: The situation remained tense on Tuesday on the campus and hostels of the Punjab Medical College because of a tug-of-war between the Muslim Students Federation (MSF) and the Islami Jamiat Tulaba (IJT). Following a threat by students to come on roads, police freed IJT President Ataullah Qasmi and four other students and asked them to keep themselves away from the campus and not to participate in political gatherings.

Ataullah Qasmi along with divisional president Bashir Ahmad Naz, at a press conference, alleged that the college administration, police and other functionaries concerned were playing in the hands of the MSF and some influential people which could be dangerous for the college peace.

They alleged that MSF activists with the help of some outsiders attacked their members and injured them seriously. But the police instead of arresting the accused rounded up IJT students which was uncalled for.

They threatened that if MSF members were not arrested within 48 hours and the case registered against IJT students not withdrawn, they would besiege PMC hostels and campus.

On the other hand, MSF students claimed that IJT members clashed with them during a function and deliberately created the law and order situation.

Civil Lines police registered a case against 13 MSF activists, including Ishtiaq Alam, Nasir Mahmood, Salak Shahbaz, Sarfraz Janjua, Ibrar Gujjar, Afzal Khan, Wajahat Khan and Rai Khizar, on the report of Aziz Hasan of the IJT. However, none of the nominated accused has so far been arrested.

Meanwhile, police commandos have been deployed on the campus and the Allied Hospital to avoid any untoward incident.

SECTION 144: The district nazim has under Section 144 imposed a ban on taking out any procession throughout the district for a period of one month.

Religious gatherings and majalis will be exempted from the ban.
