KARACHI: SHC summons MI official

KARACHI, May 24: The Sindh High Court on Tuesday summoned Military Intelligence official, Major Abdul Majeed Lashari, before court on May 31 in a plea against detention of Mohammad Ramzan by law-enforcement agencies. Mohammad Sadiq, challenging the detention of his son-in-law Mohammad Ramzan, alleged that he was detained by Military Intelligence in Hyderabad cantonment. His counsel Abdul Waheed submitted that since 2002, after undergoing the sentence under Foreigners Act, law-enforcement agencies were transferring custody of the detainee from one place to another. He said that the petitioner was failing to seek a remedy inspite of filing petitions one after the other, but whenever notice is served to respondents, they transfer his custody to other law enforcement agency.

It has also come to the knowledge of the petitioner that the detainee was declared a terrorist through announcement of Rs500,000 reward on his arrest, he mentioned.

The Directorate of Military Intelligence denied the detention of petitioner’s son-in-law.

However, Additional Advocate General Ahmed Pirzada and Standing Council Mehmood Alam Rizvi assured the court that their respective departments were tracing the whereabouts of detainee and sought time to inform court in this regard.

Petitioner’s counsel, rejecting the statement of MI Directorate, insisted on his contention and prayed the court to call Major Abdul Majeed Lashari in person from Hyderabad Cantonment and record his statement.

SHC’s division bench, comprising Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmany and Justice Mohammad Azizullah M Memon, directed the DAG to ensure appearance of MI official and fixed the matter till May 31.—PPI
