FIFA may extend Goal Project deadline

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, May 23: FIFA is likely to give three-month extension in the deadline to the contractor/consultant to complete the Goal Project being built near Qadhafi Stadium. According to the agreement signed seven months ago, the project was scheduled to be completed on May 25 this year but only 40 per cent work has been done.

The contractor has cited unprecedented rains in March/April this year after which leakage occurred from a drain which flooded the construction site.

FIFA Goal Project official Mohsin Gillani arrived here on Monday and met the contractor and the consultant. He accepted the reasons given by the contractor/consultant and is likely to extend the deadline for the completion of the project.

However, if the project is not completed after three months, FIFA will impose a penalty of $1,000 or 2,000 per day on the contractor/consultant till the completion of the project.

FIFA had recently appointed an engineer to ensure the timely completion of the project. The international body is providing $450,000 for the project given to Pakistan in 2001.

PFF could not get a piece of land from the government which delayed the project 2004. Last year AFC president Muhamed bin Hammam launched the project.
