KARACHI, May 23: Wajid Ali of Wapda and second-seed Ahsan Qamar of PIA qualified for the men’s singles quarterfinals in the 48th National badminton championship at the National Sports Training and Coaching Centre (NSTCC) on Monday.
Wajid disposed of Railways’ Naveed 15-8, 15-0, while Ahsan had the better of Intikhab Akram of NBP 15-9, 15-9. Joining these two shuttlers in the last eight were Ashraf Masih, Omar Zeeshan, Amir Islam, Shabbar Hussain, Waqas Ahmad, and Zafar Tasneem.
Wajid will now face Ashraf Masih while Ahsan takes on Zafar Tasneem in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 9.30 am. Amir Islam, a former national champion, is pitted against Zeeshan while Waqas Ahmed meets Shabbar Hussain in the other two quarterfinals.
The women’s singles also reached the last eight stage. Top-seed Aisha Akram made short work of Aneela Rasheed 11-1, 11-2 while second-seed Farzana Saleem got a walkover against Salma Sharif.
Zahida Ali, Sara Khan, Aimen Khan, Saima Manzoor, Asma Butt and Uzma Butt also sailed into the quarterfinals.
Aisha meets Zahida Ali while sisters Sara and Aimen will be pitted against each other in the quarterfinals to be played on Tuesday.
In the other matches, Saima Manzoor meets Asma Butt while Uzma Butt faces Farzana Saleem.
