Perry romps to seven-stroke victory at Colonial

FORT WORTH (Texas), May 23: American Kenny Perry cruised to a seven-shot victory at the Colonial tournament on Sunday, capturing his second title in three years at Hogan’s Alley with a record-equalling total of 19-under-par 261.

With temperatures hovering around 100 degrees Fahrenheit in Texas, Perry closed with a one-under 69 at the Colonial Country Club to finish well clear of compatriot Billy Mayfair, who also carded a 69.

It was a masterful display by the 40-year-old Perry, who had just one bogey on his scorecard all week until a double-bogey six at the 17th in the final round prevented him from lowering the 72-hole record he set when first winning the title in 2003.

Perry’s 72 hole aggregate and his seven-stroke winning margin were the best on the PGA Tour this season.

Perry, who clinched the Bay Hill Invitational earlier this year, joined Vijay Singh, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson as the only multiple winners on the 2005 PGA Tour and lifted his career earnings above $18 million.

The Kentucky resident went into the final round with a seven-shot cushion that was never genuinely challenged.

Americans Joe Durant and David Toms both returned 66s to tie for third with Australia’s Peter Lonard (69) on 11-under 269 but they all had too much ground to make up.

Leading final round scores:

DODD TRIUMPHS

MAYNOOTH (Ireland): Britain’s Stephen Dodd won his second European Tour title of the season by beating compatriot David Howell in a playoff for the Irish Open on Sunday, Howell’s second shootout disappointment in a week.

The 38-year-old Welshman, who won the season-opening China Open, birdied the first extra hole — the par-five 18th – after reaching the green in two and calmly holing out for birdie from five feet.

The pair had completed the 72 holes of regulation play on nine-under-par 279, Dodd with a 68 and Englishman Howell, who sank a 12-foot birdie putt at the last to take the tournament into extra time, a 70.

They finished two shots ahead of Argentine Angel Cabrera (68) and overnight leader Nick Dougherty of Britain (74).

Dodd’s Irish triumph was the latest chapter in a remarkable story for the Welshman, who took 11 years and 166 tournaments to clinch his maiden European Tour title in China last November but only eight further events to win his second.

Boosted by his winner’s cheque for $421,000 in Ireland, he has climbed to fourth place in the European order of merit.

Leading final round scores:
