ISLAMABAD, May 23: The federal capital is facing shortfall of 38 million gallon per day (MGD) water as it is receiving 62 MGD against the total demand of 100 MGD, a report recently prepared by Capital Development Authority (CDA) said. The total water supply requirement in the capital is increasing by three MGD annually, it said.
The report is reflecting water shortage despite heavy rains last winter. Some of the reasons for shortage listed in the report are less rains, low level of underground water, leakages in the main pipelines and wastage at the consumers’ end.
According to the CDA, the average supply to Islamabad from all resources, including dams and tubewells, is 112 MGD, but only 62 MGD is being supplied these days.
The average supply from Simly Dam, the main source of water for Islamabad, is 42 MGD against the current availability of 19 MGD.
Tubewells made a major contribution to the total supply, but at present, 22 MGD is being supplied from all tubewells against their average capacity of 34 MGD.
The total share of water for Islamabad from Khanpur Metropolitan Water Supply Project is 15 MGD, whereas only nine MGD is currently being supplied from this source.
The CDA’s report said average supply of water from all minor head works was 21 MGD against the current availability of 12 MGD.
