District council concerned over project delay

By Our Correspondent

PESHAWAR, May 23: Members of the district council have expressed concern over non-execution of the schemes approved by the Citizens Community Board (CCB) and have demanded a probe into the delay. During a meeting of the council held here on Monday most of the members criticised the authorities for the non-implementation of the CCB’s schemes despite passage of six months. They also levelled allegation of corruption against the concerned officials.

The situation prompted convener Dr Iqbal Khalil to constitute a five-member committee, led by Sirajul Haq Yousafzai, to probe into the mater.

Councillor Tariq Aziz alleged that some cheques had been issued by the concerned official without fulfilling legal formalities. District Nazim Azam Afridi told the council that 10 cheques had been issued so far. He said that legal position of issuance of cheques would be explained by the officials of the concerned department.

Convener Dr Iqbal Khalil expressed dismay over lack of progress on the CCB’s schemes and concern over inability of the district Nazim and DCO to execute the schemes.

KIDNAPPING OF CHILD: Sikh member Sahib Singh drew attention of the chair towards non-recovery of a 12-year-old Sikh child from Bara (Khyber Agency) even after passage of six months. He said another 6-year-old Sikh child had been abducted from a school in broad daylight in Orakzai Agency recently and the administration had completely failed to recover either of the children.

He said that Sikh community was facing hardships in Khyber and Orakzai Agencies where they had closed down their businesses and their children had stopped going to schools. “It is for the first time since the inception of Pakistan that Sikh community is feeling insecurity”, he added. He said many countries, including India, were wiling to accommodate members of the Sikh community but they preferred Pakistan because they considered it their own country.

The Nazim, on the occasion, constituted a committee that would meet the NWFP Governor Khalilur Rehman and apprise him of kidnapping of the Sikh children.

LAND DISPOSAL POLICY: The council also proposed amendments in the land disposal policy. According to the proposal the discretionary powers of the chief ministers and ministers regarding allotment of government land are to be abolished.

A quota in land allotment for private schools was also proposed. At present 25 per cent quota is fixed for community schools. It was also proposed that a land quota should be fixed for building of health outlets in the amended policy.

The council also proposed the name of the City Development and Municipal Department should be changed to City Development Municipal Authority. Council will again meet on Tuesday.
