OIC calls for adequate Muslim world’s representation

By Our Correspondent

UNITED NATIONS, May 22: The OIC has called for adequate representation of the Muslim world in an expanded UN Security Council which could expand from 15 to 26 members as proposed in the UN reforms.

In a letter to UN General Assembly President Jean Ping, Turkey’s Ambassador at the UN and Chairman of the Islamic Group at the organization Baki Ilkin said that the reforms must enhance transparency, accountability and democratization of the Security Council.

Copies of the letter were also sent to the Group of Four — India, Brazil, Germany and Japan – which is seeking more permanent members on the council, and the Italy/Pakistan-led Uniting for Consensus group.

“Concerning the enlargement issue, the OIC requests that the Islamic world must have adequate representation in any category of members in an expanded SC,” the chairman of the Islamic Group said.

“As previously stated on several occasions, the group maintains the view that the Security Council reform must be comprehensive in all its aspects and stresses the importance of enhancing transparency, accountability and democratization of the Security Council,” he said.
