RAWALPINDI, May 22: Mohammadi XI scored a three-wicket victory over Saify XI in the final of the Dawoodi Bohra Community, Rawalpindi here at the ARL ground on Sunday. The tournament was organised by community’s association of youngsters - Shabab-ul Eid-uz Zahai to celebrate the 94th birthday of their spiritual leader Dr Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin (TUS).
Saify XI made 154 before they were bowled out in the 18th over — two overs before their allotted quota of 20.
Idrees Hatim Bhai’s unbeaten knock of 38 helped Mohammadi XI to wipe off the target in the 19th over for the loss of seven wickets.
Shaikh Hatim Bhai made a quickfire 40 with the help of three sixes and two fours.
Saify XI were targeting a big total as they scored 100 for two wickets in the 10th over before Mohammadi XI’s captain Rizwan Ehsan Ali and Murtaza Fakhruddin pegged them back with four wickets each.
Mohammadi XI were struggling at 82 for five halfway through their innings. Captain Nooruddin Jivaji got rid of Rizwan off his first delivery. Rizwan, who made a match-winning half century in the semifinal against Taheri XI, was brilliantly caught by a diving Mustafa.
However, Idrees Hatim Bhai raised his team’s hopes with a responsible knock of unbeaten 38.
Earlier, in the first semifinal Saify XI beat Burhani XI by 58 runs in a one-sided match while Rizwan played a captain’s knock of 51 to help Mohammadi XI beat Taheri XI by three wickets.
Opener Ali Asghar made 54 for Saify XI to help his team post 163 against Burhani XI in the first semifinal.
Burhani XI suffered a major setback when their powerful hitter Abbas Shabbir Vania holed out in the deep off the very first ball of their innings. They could never recover from there on and only Taha Shabbir Mangla saved them blushes with 46 which featured four sixes and four boundaries as the entire team were dismissed for 105 in 13 overs.
In the second semifinal, Juzar Bhai Saheb was the top scorer for Taheri XI with 29 as his team made 160 for the loss of nine wickets in the allotted 20 overs against Mohammadi XI.
However, a calculated innings of 51 off as many balls by Rizwan enabled Mohammadi XI to record a three-wicket victory with five balls to spare. Abbas Zakiuddin also played well for his innings of 19 while Moeed, who was involved in a crucial 56-run fourth wicket partnership with Rizwan scored 21.
Ghulam Mustafa and Asif Maqbool supervised all the matches.
Meanwhile, it was a rest day on Saturday in the table tennis tournament. Semifinals will be played on Monday while the final is scheduled for Tuesday.
Murtaza Adam Ali will meet Rizwan in the first semifinal while Juzar Bhai Saheb takes on Hasnain Asghar Ali in the other semifinal.
