Afridi inspires Pakistan to huge score

GROS ISLET, May 22: Shahid Afridi smashed a sparkling 56 as Pakistan piled up an imposing total of 303 for six in the third and final One-day International against West Indies here on Sunday. Afridi faced just 30 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes in his 26th one-day half century as Pakistan made West Indies captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul rue his decision to put the tourists into bat.

After Afridi’s fireworks, Yasir Hameed (41), Bazid Khan (66), Yousuf Youhana (50) and stand-in captain Younis Khan (40) batted well to give their team a strong chance of completing a clean sweep of the three-match series.

Wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal smashed the last three balls of the innings from left-arm seamer Ian Bradshaw for sixes to finish with 24 from just nine balls.

Bradshaw, who finished with figures of two for 78, earlier conceded 14 runs off three balls to Afridi who reached his fifty with a six over square leg.

He eventually holed out to Dwayne Bravo at deep square leg from a Corey Collymore full toss after adding 86 in 11 overs with Yasir.

Yasir was one of the three changes in the Pakistan side as the tourists also gave Bazid Khan and off-spinner Arshad Khan their first games of the series.

West Indies, desperate for a win after eight consecutive defeats, replaced Xavier Marshall and Darren Powell with Dwayne Smith and Pedro Collins.

Bazid, the son for former Pakistan captain Majid Khan, played sensibly to score his maiden one-day half century from 71 balls and shared a 96-run stand with Youhana.
