Top seed Aqeel Khan beats Asim in men’s singles thriller

KARACHI, May 22: Top seed Aqeel Khan still reigned supreme after he beat second seed Asim Shafiq from Islamanad in an absolute thriller 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) in the final of the Greener Pakistan National Hard court tennis championship organised by Subh-e-Nau, before large band of tennis fans on Sunday at the Karachi Gymkhana.

In a tense first set, both players matched each other stroke for stroke until Asim dropped his service which enabled Aqeel to win the set 7-5.

In the next set it was Asim this time who broke Aqeel’s service and was leading 3-0.

But Aqeel fought his way back into contention drawing abreast 4-4, 5-5, 6-6 and finally winning the tiebreaker 7-4.

In the Juniors boys under-17 final, top seed Tanveer Ashiq from Lahore beat fifth seed Yasir Khan in another gruelling encounter.

Yasir, the younger brother of Aqeel, shocked the top seed pinching the first set 5-7.

But Tanveer fighting back with his back to the wall, was soon level 1-1 grabbing the second set 7-5.

Now in a better frame of mind and playing some lovely cross court smashes from the baseline, Tanveer went on to win the final set and match 6-2.

In a very interesting mixed doubles event Shahid Khan from Faisalabad and Farha Waseem finally got the better of the second seeds Jalil Khan and Seher Khan 6-4, 6-3 in a match that included some very long rallies.

Both sets of players brought out their best with their serves and volleys.

The boys under-13 event is still to be decided after top seed Sunny Williams who was said to be overage, had to have a wrist test and the results will be received by the organisers on Monday.

If Sunny is not overage he will play his semifinal against Omar Shahid. Zuhair Raza has already reached the final.

Following were the results:

Men’s singles (final) Aqeel Khan beat Asim Shafiq (Islamabad) 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).

Juniors under-17 (final) Tanveer Ashiq (Lahore) beat Yasir Khan 5-7, 7-5, 6-2. Ladies singles (final) Seher Khwaja beat Sana Bhagat 6-0, 7-5. Girls singles under-18 (finals)

Quratul Ain beat Mahak Tanveer 6-0, 6-0.

Men’s doubles (final): Aqeel Khan and Jalil Khan beat Asim Shafiq and Shehzad Khan 6-3, 6-7, 7-5.

Mixed Doubles (final): Shahid Khan and Farha Waseem beat Jalil Khan and Seher Khwaja 6-4, 6-3.
