Top official involved in paper leak

By Shafique Ahmed

PESHAWAR, May 22: A student arrested during inquiry into an examination paper leak is reported to have implicated his uncle, a top official of the Board of Intermediate and Secon- dary Education (BISE), in the scandal.

The official, according to sources, has sent his resignation to Governor Khalilur Rehman.

A special investigation team of the city police arrested Farhan, a second year pre-engineering student of the Edward College and nephew of the top BISE official. He was sent to jail after his physical remand was denied by the magistrate on Sunday, the sources said.

The BISE Chairman Brig. (retd) Manzar Iqbal Bangash had registered an FIR with the University Town police saying that when he visited the PGS College in Hayatabad township, he caught many students writing answers of Intermediate Physics paper (part-II) on original BISE sheets outside the examination hall. He cancelled the physics paper.

After the registration of the case police constituted the investigation team which interrogated sons of some influential people.

The team arrested a second year science student, Bilal, who confessed to having obtained the Physics paper before the examination and named some of his accomplices.

The sources said that two other students, Papa and Yamaha, also students of FSC (science) had been interrogated along with Bilal. The said they had received the paper from two brothers, Tasawwar and Hamid.

Police finally arrested Farhan, son of a senior Wapda official from his home in Hayatabad Township and released the other students, sources said.

The investigation team recorded the statement of Farhan under Section 161 of the Pakistan Penal Code, and he is reported to have said that he got the paper from his paternal uncle.

Meanwhile, leader of the Business Forum of Pakistan and Senator Ilyas Bilour has called upon the provincial governor to take stern action against BISE officials involved in the leaking of the paper.

In a press statement issued here on Sunday, Senator Bilour alleged that cheating in BISE examinations had been increased due to the inefficiency of the officials concerned.

He disclosed that the English paper of the ongoing intermediate examination also had been leaked, to the anguish of studious students.

He asked the NWFP government to thoroughly investigate the matter and punish those who involved in the affair.
