GILGIT, May 22: No nomination papers for the reserved seats for women in the local bodies in the Diamer district of Northern Areas have been filed. The by-elections for the reserved seats are to be held on Monday (May 23) in the region, but there will be no contest for the reserved seats in Chilas municipal committee and in Diamer district council.

Officials said that the tribesmen had opposed women’s participation in the institution of local bodies.

They quoted some tribesmen as saying that tribal norms did not allow women to sit along with male counterparts in the councils or participate in public gatherings.
