Plan for D.I. Khan approved


ISLAMABAD, May 22: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has approved a multi-billion rupees developmental package for the remote division of Dera Ismail Khan. The package will be a part of the Khushal Pakistan programme which the government is launching soon to provide electricity, roads, gas and other basic facilities to the common man.

Senator Waqar Ahmad Khan who called on Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz at the PM house, gave the details of the package after the meeting.

He said, during the meeting the prime minister reiterated the commitment of the government to take measures for the progress and prosperity of the country and improving living standard of the people.

The package includes sewerage system for the D.I. Khan city, provision of safe drinking water, laying of water distribution lines, provision of electricity for the whole division and road and public health system networks.

Mr Waqar said gas facilities in D.I. Khan was inadequate to meet the needs of some 2.5 million people of the division and resultantly, tree- cutting was alarmingly high and creating environmental problems in the city.

He added that Mr Aziz will visit D.I.Khan soon to formally inaugurate the new gas supply project for the city and its adjoining areas.

Mr Waqar said there was a chain of colleges in the city and tehsils of Kulachi, Tank and Paharpur but there was no intermediate and secondary education board.

The PM, he added, has agreed to the proposal of establishing a secondary board in D.I. Khan for which necessary directives have already been issued.

The PM has also directed for setting up four new departments in the Gomal University besides, steps for improvement of polytechnic institute, medical college and agriculture faculty of the university.

Directives have also been given for construction of a by-pass in the city to facilitate the people.

The famous Indus Highway is passing through D.I.Khan. The portion from Peshawar to D.I.Khan has been completed while the contract has already been awarded for construction of a stretch between D.I.Khan and D.G.Khan.—APP
