RAWALPINDI, May 21: Hasnain Asghar Ali checked into the semifinals of the Dawoodi Bhora table tennis tournament on Friday evening. Having dropped only one game to Rizwan Ehsan Ali, Hasnain recorded his fourth successive victory against Abbas Noorani as he stretched his points tally to 10 from six matches.
Rizwan is so far unbeaten in Pool B after playing six matches and is likely to meet defending champion Murtaza Adam Ali in the semifinals.
Hasnain’s opponent in the last four will be Juzar Bhai Saheb who has already topped Pool A winning all of his seven matches.
On Friday evening, Rizwan scored two easy victories over Abbas Noorani and Murtaza Sadiq Ali and now sits pretty atop Pool B with 12 points.
In what was a major upset, defending champion Murtaza tasted his second defeat in Pool A as he was stunned by Hassamuddin who scored a 22-20, 15-20, 20-18 win.
However Hassamuddin went down 12-21, 12-21 to Mohammad Mansoor in another Pool A match.
Meanwhile, a two-day knockout volleyball tournament also started on Friday in which Team Abuzar and Team Zaki qualified for the final after beating their respective rivals.
Team Abuzar carved out a 25-10, 25-12 win against Team Abbas while Team Zakir edged Team Joji 25-7, 13-25, 25-17.
