Rashid overcomes Hameed in thriller

KARACHI, May 21: The Pakistan Davis Cup non playing captain Rashid Malik won the men’s singles title in Toyota Camry tennis championship 2005 organised by the Indus Motor Company, when he beat former Davis Cup captain Hameedul Haq in three sets before a large gathering under floodlights at the Karachi Gymkhana on Saturday night.

Top senior players from all over the country participated in this prestigious tournament which drew crowds of tennis fans to the venue during the tournament.

In a clash of the titans the tennis fans were treated with some excellent tennis as Hameed won a marathon first set in a tiebreak 6-7.

Unruffled with the proceedings Rashid displayed his class and with fine slices over the net and powerful serves took the next set 6-0.

Continuing where he had left off in the second, Rashid dominated play again in the final set, but Hameed was not giving up in a hurry.

Playing some excellent shots which drew repeated applause he caught his wily opponent on the wrong foot several times. But time was running out on him.

Rashid with a couple of fine aces picked up the final set and match 6-2 as the large crowd of tennis fans cheered on the two veterans to the echo.

The President of the Karachi Gymkhana Iqbal Umer was the chief guest on the occasion and along with Shah Saad Hussain, Director Corporate Planning and Raza Ansari, General Manager Marketing Division presented the prizes to the winners and runners-up.

The winners of the championship received total prize money of Rs50,0000 and also received crystal trophies along with the runners-up.

Following was the results:

Executive singles (final): Rashid Malik (Lahore) beat Hameed ul Haq (Islamabad) 6-7 (3-7) 6-0, 6-2.

Executive Doubles (final): Hameedul Haq and Mohammad Khalid beat Imran Ahmed and Kalim Ghanchi 6-3, 6-4.
