DHAKA, May 21: Police in riot gear swung into action on Saturday as opposition activists took to the streets to enforce a day-long general strike across Bangladesh to protest the killing of a Awami League leader in Dhaka earlier in the week. The Awami League called the dawn-to-dusk strike to protest the killing of its leader, Khorshed Alam Bachchu, a lawyer, who was gunned down near his house on Tuesday.
The Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Inu) joined the AL for enforcing the strike, but the other allies of the League did not respond to the call. A rickshaw driver suffered severe burns when pro-strike activists attacked him for trying to carry on with his day’s wrok.
